Teaching Artists will be assigned to partner sites in St. Louis City and County to lead bi-weekly, 2-hour art workshops for ages 7-12. Compensation $70/hour. Training pay and meeting compensation is included. Teaching Artists must have weekday availability and reliable transportation is essential.
Visual Artists with experience teaching youth ages 7-12, and have a passion for social and economic justice issues, are encouraged to apply. Experience in other art forms, such as poetry, music or theater, is also encouraged. Please contact Luisa Otero Prada, Youth Initiative Coordinator at youth@breadandrosesmo.org, to inquire about opportunities.
Artists of color and artists who speak English as a second language are strongly encouraged to apply to join our diverse Youth Initiative staff.

WRITER & DIRECTOR FOR WORKERS' OPERA 2026
Bread and Roses seeks a director and a playwright for the 2026 Workers’ Opera. The Workers’ Opera consists of a series of collectively devised vignettes. The ensemble consists of workers from across industries. The ensemble meets together to discuss racism, poverty, and social and economic justice issues that affect the workers directly.

Working with a playwright who helps them shape their ideas, performers create their own pieces to perform in the Workers' Opera. Past topics have included raising the minimum wage, voting rights, Medicaid expansion, workplace safety and immigration reform. These conversations and stories become the content of the Workers’ Opera performances. Past scripts highlight the history of labor rights in the US, and provide a satirical take on corporations and politicians.
The Workers’ Opera is rehearsed with the director, and performed for public audiences, in union halls, community centers and other non-traditional spaces. Most performances are presented free of charge. The Workers’ Opera begins twice-weekly rehearsals in June, 2026. Public performances are planned for October, 2026.
The ideal team of director and playwright have a deep interest in racial and economic justice issues, and deep experience working in community-based arts settings with non-actors of diverse backgrounds. We seek a team that values artistic process and develops deep and meaningful relationships that bring out the creativity in each participant.
These are paid positions for professional theatre artists. Please direct inquiries and send your resume to Emily Kohring, Executive Artistic Director, director@breadandrosesmo.org.
