The Workers’ Opera productions have been well received at the Grand Center Theatre Crawl, The Missouri History Museum, and in Columbia, Missouri.

Now, we perform at two local union halls. This new rendition, revamped and remixed, includes some of the original cast as well as new additions, new poems, new music, dance and movement, historical reenactments and many new stories.

Saint Louis has a rich, mostly unexplored labor history. And there is history in the making again today, as fast food workers, home health care workers, childcare workers, university adjuncts, call center workers, hotel workers and lawn care workers begin to find their voice; all of this in the face of the political push in Missouri for so-called right to work legislation in the private and public sectors. Ferguson, too, has made it increasingly clear that workers engaged in these organizing efforts understand clearly the connection between workers’ rights and civil rights in this post-industrial society growing up around us.

To honor these efforts, Bread & Roses Missouri is producing a workers’ opera to connect the then with the now. The performers are workers turned actors, members of the movement itself, commemorating their history, and sharing the current experience of the ongoing struggle. This show continues the rich local tradition of celebrating social justice and solidarity with the arts.
